A new Environmental Product Declaration for Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) Framing from the Steel Framing Industry Association helps all AEC players deliver sustainable building designs.

Topics

The Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA) has released a new Environmental Product Declaration for Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) Framing, the latest tool for contractors, building owners, architects and others who strive to deliver advanced building designs that meet the latest LEED™ and other sustainable rating systems, programs and standards.

The new SFIA EPD for CFS Framing — SCS-EPD-07103 (version Jan. 25, 2022) — can be seamlessly integrated into project specifications as an option with company-specific EPDs. SFIA offers a Specifications Review Service for this task. Architects can request the SFIA Specifications Review Service for steel framing, which is a completely free checkup.

“The cold-formed steel framing EPD is another tool for the industry to use, not only for meeting green standards, but also as another example of the sustainability of steel,” says Larry Williams, SFIA executive director. “It builds on other well-known sustainability attributes, such as recycled content, infinite recyclability and durability of cold-formed steel framing members.”

The new SFIA EPD for CFS Framing — SCS-EPD-07103 — is valid for five years from May 28, 2021 through May 27, 2026. It’s available as a free download from SFIA.

CFS products represented by the declaration include only those companies listed in the new EPD.

  • The prior industry EPD for CFS Framing, which had been issued by the Steel Recycling Center and not by SFIA, expired in January of this year
  • The current EPD is an opt-in project of the SFIA membership, whereby only the members who participated in the study are listed on the EPD
