Total cold-formed steel (CFS) manufacturing volume fell 4.0% during Q1 2024 compared with the same quarter one year ago, Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA) data show. The SFIA reports — SFIA 2024 Data, SFIA 2024 Data with Analysis, SFIA 2023 Data and SFIA 2023 Data with Analysis — are available for purchase from the SFIA Store.
“The 2024 Q1 report comes after a stellar 2023 when total volume rose 9.7%,” said Larry Williams, SFIA executive director, about the data contained in the report. “A dip in CFS tonnage is understandable after such a strong year and as manufacturers approach this year’s construction market with vigilance.”
However, the data reports also show that structural CFS framing volume rose 1.9% in Q1 2024 compared with Q1 2023, with growth coming in the South Central and West U.S. regions.
According to the SFIA reports:
- Total volume of CFS members for Q1 2024 fell 4.0% from Q1 2023 volume levels
- Structural CFS volume rose in Q1 2024 — up 1.9% year-over-year compared to Q1 2023

Two Reports Available
1. SFIA Data
The 2024 SFIA Data and 2023 SFIA Data reports are the only market research reports available that provide quarterly and annual tonnage data for the movement of steel framing products in the United States by type and by region and that track steel framing product inventories by type and by region. The data is derived from quarterly surveys of leading CFS manufacturers that represent more than 85% of the CFS products manufactured in the U.S.
The data and market intelligence is collected by the Thompson Research Group (TRG), which surveys CFS manufacturers, aggregates the data and reports on the volume of steel used to produce steel studs, track, joists and related CFS materials.
2. SFIA Data With Analysis
The companion reports, 2024 SFIA Data with Analysis and 2023 SFIA Data with Analysis, adds market intelligence captured by TRG surveys of companies that buy and use CFS products and presents this analysis in context with other construction market indices.
