ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s Sustainability Initiatives Honored
ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Canada’s leading flat steel producer and an SFIA member, was honored by CN, Canadian National Railway Company, for their enhanced and continued commitment to sustainability.
CN’s EcoConnexions Partnership Program celebrates companies dedicated to building a more sustainable future by supporting climate action, reducing their environmental impact, promoting biodiversity and more sustainable and ethical business practices.
“CN is proud to celebrate the increased actions of our customers and supply chain partners who strive to operate more sustainably,” said CN executive vice-president and chief marketing officer Doug MacDonald. “Our aim is for CN’s EcoConnexions Partnership Program to be a vehicle of collaboration as we deepen relationships across our supply chain.”In recognition of the sustainable business practices of its partners, CN is planting 100,000 trees in Canada and the United States in partnership with Tree Canada.

U. S. Steel Releases Climate-Related Financial Report
United States Steel Corporation, a leading steel producer and an SFIA member, released its 2023 Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures report. The report reaffirms U.S. Steel’s commitment to providing stakeholders with increased transparency and disclosure into its sustainability program.
The report outlines:
- How climate-related risks are managed
- What climate-related opportunities exist
- U.S. Steel’s approach to addressing climate-related issues in the areas of governance, strategy, risk management, metrics and targets

The disclosures report reaffirms U.S. Steel’s commitment to providing stakeholders with increased transparency and disclosure into its sustainability program.
Insights gained from the report will enable U.S. Steel to integrate updated climate risk considerations and inform its Enterprise Risk Management program while strengthening its resilience.

Nucor Sets Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas Targets for 2050
Nucor Corporation, a Charlotte, N.C., steel products manufacturer and SFIA member, announced net-zero, science-based, greenhouse gas targets for 2050 and established a new interim target for 2030. According to a company release:
- Nucor will achieve its goals by increasing the use of clean electricity, carbon capture and sequestration and near zero GHG iron making
- Nucor will also utilize technologies to reduce its consumption of injection and charge carbon and will reduce the use of natural gas in its production processes
“In recent years, we have made purposeful investments to increase the availability of carbon-free electricity, and to support other emerging technologies that will help lead the way to a clean industrial future,” said Leon Topalian, chair, president and chief executive officer of Nucor.
Nucor is already one of the cleanest steel producers in the world. The company’s circular production process uses an average of nearly 80% recycled scrap and has one third the GHG emissions intensity as compared to the average traditional extractive steelmaking process using a blast furnace.
