Total cold-formed steel (CFS) product manufacturing volume increased 2.3% during Q2 2024 compared with Q1 this year, Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA) data show. The SFIA report — SFIA 2024 Data, which includes the Q2 data — is available for purchase from the SFIA Store.
Additional data reports, including data and analysis from 2023, 2022, etc. — are also available for purchase.
“The Q2 volumes look tremendous, especially after 2023’s 9.7% total volume growth,” said Don Allen, SFIA’s new executive director. “Manufacturers had started this year with a measure of vigilance. But now, the construction markets appear to be moving at full throttle.”
Total volume of both structural and nonstructural manufactured CFS framing products was up in the East, North Central and West U.S. regions. The South Central region showed a decrease in manufacturing volume output. According to the Q2 2024 survey:
- East: 2.6% growth in Q2 2024 CFS total volume vs. Q1
- North Central: 6.9% growth in Q2 2024 CFS total volume vs. Q1
- West: 5.5% growth in Q2 2024 CFS total volume vs. Q1

Two Reports Available
1. SFIA Data
The 2024 SFIA Data report is the only market research report that provides quarterly and annual tonnage data for the movement of steel framing products in the United States by type and by region and that track steel framing product inventories by type and by region. The data is derived from quarterly surveys of leading CFS manufacturers that represent more than 85% of the CFS products manufactured in the U.S.
The data is collected by the Thompson Research Group (TRG), which surveys CFS manufacturers, aggregates the data and reports on the volume of steel used to produce steel studs, track, joists and related CFS materials.
2. SFIA Data With Analysis
The companion report, 2024 SFIA Data with Analysis, adds market intelligence captured by TRG surveys of companies that buy and use CFS products and presents this analysis in context with other construction market indices.
