BuildSteel is tracking the sustainability initiatives of Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA) members and their partners. Here is some recent sustainability news related to the cold-formed steel (CFS) framing industry.
Cleveland-Cliffs Reaffirms Commitment to Decarbonization Project
Cleveland-Cliffs, a flat-rolled steel producer in North America and SFIA member, announced it remains fully committed toward the transformational project underway at its Middletown Works integrated facility in Middletown, Ohio. As previously disclosed, Cliffs was selected for award negotiations for up to $500 million in total funding from the United States Department of Energy toward the replacement of its Middletown blast furnace with a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) Plant and two Electric Melting Furnaces (EMF).
The company continues to be in active negotiations with the Department of Energy related to the award-specific terms and conditions. Cliffs remains optimistic about receiving final approvals and proceeding with this carbon-friendly and high-return project.
“We continue to move forward with award negotiations and project execution,” says Cleveland-Cliffs’ chairman, president and CEO Lourenco Goncalves. “Following our recent real-life trials with hydrogen reduction at Indiana Harbor and Middletown, and our well recognized success in Direct Reduction in Toledo, OH, this project is a natural next step.”

U.S. Steel First to Offer ResponsibleSteel Certified Products
United States Steel Corporation, a steel producer and member of SFIA, announced it is the first steel company in the world to qualify to sell its products as ResponsibleSteel Certified Steel at its Big River facility in Osceola, Arkansas.
Big River received the first ResponsibleSteel Site Certification in North America in 2022 and is at the forefront of innovation by achieving certification for sustainably sourced and manufactured steel.
ResponsibleSteel is the leading global multi-stakeholder standards body in the steel industry, offering certification at the site level and, for the first time, steel certification.
“The rigorous requirements needed for ResponsibleSteel Certified Steel represent a new gold standard for responsible steel manufacturing on a global scale,” says U.S. Steel president and CEO David B. Burritt. “This certification gives customers and stakeholders confidence that Big River is on the path to near zero and demonstrates that we are using responsible practices across our supply chain.”
