The Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) is seeking mentors for the 2024 CFSEI Student Competition on cold-formed steel (CFS) design. The competition encourages students to apply their creative thinking skills to solve engineering problems.
Competition Details
The 2024 CFS Design Competition is open to all full-time students at all levels. Students can work on the project individually or within a team.
- August 2024: Competition begins
- October 4, 2024: Mentor applications due
- November 1, 2024: Students must submit their Intent to Participate documents
- November 15, 2024: Mentors assigned no later than this date
- January 17, 2025: Students’ design submissions due
The winning designs will be recognized and exhibited at appropriate platforms such as professional conferences, websites and newsletters.
Mentor Qualifications
Professional Experience and Expertise
- Industry Knowledge: Extensive experience in steel framing design, including practical application and theoretical understanding
- Project Experience: Involvement in the design and construction of relevant CFS-framed projects
Interpersonal Skills
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to explain complex concepts clearly
- Active Listening: Ability to listen to students’ ideas and concerns, providing thoughtful feedback
- Patience and supportiveness: Patience in guiding students through their learning and project development process
Commitment and Availability
Mentors must be willing to support the competition by dedicating time to preparation, meetings and review sessions as needed. By applying, mentors confirm their commitment to the 2024 CFSEI Student Competition and to the mentoring guidelines.

Mentors will be selected based on proximity to the student.
Cold-Formed Steel Engineers InstituteThe Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) comprises hundreds of structural engineers and other design professionals who are finding a better way to produce safe and efficient designs for commercial and residential structures with cold-formed steel. CFSEI members work together to develop and evolve industry standards and design methods, produce and issue technical bulletins, and provide seminars and online training to improve the knowledge and skills base of engineers and design professionals.
CFSEI is part of the Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA), where its leadership and role as the industry’s key touchpoint for CFS design continue to be supported.
