SFIA 114 Fire Performance Testing Requirements for Foam Plastic Insulation Use in Steel-Framed Exterior Walls Under the IBC

Course Description

The International Building Code contains a variety of fire safety provisions regarding the use of foam plastic insulation and foam plastic insulating sheathing.

Building code requirements for these important insulation materials and their different uses include several fire performance tests for these insulation materials and assemblies where they are used (for example, steel-framed exterior walls). The specific scope of testing required is both prompted and influenced by the details of a project, the configuration of the assembly, and where the foam plastic is located within the assembly.

This course is intended to provide attendees with an understanding of the various fire performance testing requirements, what prompts and influences them, and where to locate the relevant provisions in the IBC.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the difference between fire performance testing of materials and assemblies
  2. Identity several fire performance tests required for foam plastic insulation, foam plastic insulating sheathing, and their use in steel-framed exterior walls of buildings
  3. Describe how different project and assembly conditions may influence fire performance tests required for steel-framed walls containing foam plastic insulation and foam plastic insulating sheathing
  4. Identity where fire performance requirements applicable to steel-framed walls containing foam plastic insulation are located within the IBC
  5. Describe how and where to find compliance information regarding fire performance of foam plastic insulation, foam plastic insulating sheathing, and assemblies containing these materials
