Course Description

Steel is ubiquitous in society across all market sectors and will play a key role in our future low-carbon society.

The American steel industry has been working for many years to reduce its impacts on the environment while developing innovative products to meet the demands of its customers for strong, durable, and sustainable products.

This presentation will cover current sustainability attributes of steel produced in the U.S. as well as opportunities and challenges in the pathway to decarbonization.

Mark A. Thimons, vice-president sustainability, American Iron and Steel Institute

Mark A. Thimons is Vice-President, Sustainability at the American Iron and Steel Institute where he is responsible for developing and implementing a coordinated sustainability program for the North American steel industry. Focus areas include research projects that demonstrate the life cycle advantages of steel in all markets, environmental product declarations (EPDs) and life cycle assessment (LCA) studies, steel decarbonization, education programs on steel recycling and sustainability topics, as well as other sustainability-related initiatives relevant to the steel industry in the United States.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania and a LEED accredited professional in the specialty of building design and construction.

 

Brandie Sebastian, senior director sustainability, energy and environment, American Iron and Steel Institute

Brandie Sebastian, senior director sustainability, energy and environment, American Iron and Steel Institute

Brandie Sebastian is the Senior Director of Sustainability, Energy, and Environment at the American Iron and Steel Institute. She has 17 years of sustainability experience split between industry and consulting. Her role at AISI is multi-faceted with a focus on technical sustainability data and decarbonization activities for the American steel industry. Her expertise pertains to the areas of life cycle assessment, environmental product declaration development, circularity and recycling, and sustainability standards development through ASTM and ISO.

Sebastian served as the Vice Chair/Secretary of the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment from 2014-2022 and currently co-chairs the ACLCA Policy Committee. She also serves on the Board of the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute. She is an LCA Certified Professional and holds a B.S. in Environmental Systems Engineering and an M.S. in Energy & Geo-Environmental Engineering from Penn State University.
