Overview

While most builders and designers are familiar with structural steel for building support, most are less familiar with the economies and capabilities of cold-formed steel (CFS) framing. This session shows where code requirements in both the International Building Code, International Residential Code and other code bodies encourage the use of steel framing, and how these framing systems meet and exceed high-wind code and performance requirements for multiple areas across the country. To fully express how CFS performs under testing and pressure conditions, a product comparison between multiple materials (IE: wood vs. steel) will be presented.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner will be able to:

  • Find code requirements for CFS framing in the International Residential Code, International Building Code and Florida Building Code
  • Identify both structural and nonstructural applications of CFS framing
  • Apply acoustical and fire separation requirements to CFS framing systems
  • Understand how steel lateral load-resisting systems can provide life-safety and resilience in high-wind environments
  • Compare sustainability, cost and resilience of steel and wood framing

Presenter
