Course Overview

The CFSEI Short Course on Cold-Formed Steel Structures provides in-depth instruction on the analysis and design of cold-formed steel (CFS) members and connections for commercial and residential applications. Topics include wall studs, floor joists, purlins, girts, decks and panels.

The course is designed for engineers at all levels of CFS design experience. Engineers new to CFS will learn about the fundamental behavior of CFS members and connections and how these principles are addressed in AISI S100, North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members.

Experienced engineers can use the course to reinforce and expand their understanding of CFS behavior, design requirements, connections and structural systems.

Topics include:

  • Mechanical Properties of Steel and Effects of Forming
  • CFS Behavior – Local Buckling and Postbuckling Strength of Thin Flat Elements
  • Member Load Effects and Behavior – Flexure, Tension, Compression, Shear, and Combined Forces
  • Bracing and Stability Requirements
  • Direct Strength Method
  • Connections and Connecting Elements
  • Framing Standards and System Requirements
  • Shear Wall and Strap-Braced Wall Design

Zane Clark, P.E., S.E. has a decade of experience evaluating and designing a wide variety of structures. His specialized expertise in the design of cold-formed steel (CFS) comes from years of design, project management, and quality control work on numerous load-bearing CFS structures, many of them having 10+ stories and complex CFS lateral force resisting systems. In his consulting work he has teamed up with architects, contractors, building owners, and other stakeholders, and he brings to the table practical solutions that work for all parties. He is highly familiar with the building and material codes, the latest design guidance from technical organizations, and engineering best practices. Zane continues to design CFS buildings through his firm, Zane Clark Consulting. He is a member of the ASCE/SEI Committee on Cold-Formed Steel Members and speaks on CFS design and construction at regional and national events, webinars, and trainings.
