Course Description

As of July 2, 2024, the Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA) became an accredited ANSI Standards Development Organization and will be responsible for the development of a portion of the standards related to the cold-formed steel (CFS) industry that were previously maintained by American Iron and Steel Institute.

The following standards will be maintained by SFIA:

  • AISI S202, Code of Standard Practice for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Framing
  • AISI S220, North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Nonstructural Framing
  • AISI S230, Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing – Prescriptive Method for One- and Two-Family Dwellings
  • AISI S240, North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Framing
  • AISI S250, North American Standard for Thermal Transmittance of Building Envelopes with Cold-Formed Steel Framing
  • AISI S400, North American Standard for Seismic Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Systems
  • AISI S9XX, a suite of twelve (12) test standards for Cold-Formed Steel Framing

Jay Larson, SFIA Standards Committee Secretariat

Jay Larson, SFIA Standards Committee Secretariat, work as a civil/structural engineer for Bethlehem Steel in 1979. After a series of transitions from construction to facilities engineering, to sales engineering he found himself in the marketing department for coated sheet steel (galvanized and Galvalume) in construction. In 1991 he became Vice Chair of the AISI Committee on Specifications and in 1998 he became the first Chair of the AISI Committee on Framing Standards. Jay made the move to AISI in 2003 and served as Secretary of the COFS. In 2008 the Secretary responsibilities for the COS and COFS were combined and he was appointed to serve as Secretary of the AISI Standards Council.

Meredith Perez, SFIA Standards Committee Administrator

Meredith Perez, SFIA Standards Committee Administrator, started with the Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute in 2005 and has been working in the steel industry in some capacity ever since. Her experience touches on many areas including marketing, sustainability and committee administration. With past experiences of developing standards at the Canadian Standards Association and being a member of the National Building Code of Canada Standing Committee for Small Buildings and Housing, Meredith is well equipped as the SFIA Standards Committee Administrator.

The Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA) Steel Framing Learning Portal is an education platform offering cold-formed steel (CFS) framing educational resources 24/7/365. The portal offers live webinars and on-demand CFS framing courses. Many of the educational resources are registered with AIA CES and participants can earn HSW LU for the successful completion of select webinars and courses.
