The Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) has named Patrick W. Ford, P.E., S.E., the recipient of the 2023 CFSEI John P. Matsen Award for Distinguished Service. Ford received the award at the 2023 CFSEI Expo, which was held May 8-10, 2023, in New Orleans.
The CFSEI John P. Matsen Award recognizes the significant contributions of an individual who has volunteered time, talent and resources to the cold-formed steel industry. CFSEI renamed the award in 2016 to honor John P. Matsen, P.E., founder and principal of Matsen Ford Design Associates in Waukesha, Wisconsin, after Matsen passed away in June 2015.
Ford: A 40-Year-Plus Career
Ford’s professional experience includes serving as technical director of the Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA), management and engineering design with R.A. Smith (and previously with Matsen Ford Design), as well as managing, engineering and business positions for several other firms. His work has involved several structural design, contract and project management functions on a wide variety of commercial, industrial and institutional building projects.

Pat Ford, SFIA technical director, is the winner of the 2023 CFSEI John P. Matsen Award for Distinguished Service.
Relative to cold-formed steel (CFS) structural framing, Ford has more than 40 years of experience that includes application of the latest technologies and design concepts to load-bearing structures and a wide variety of curtainwall and prefabricated systems. His engineering systems design experience includes structural steel, concrete, engineered masonry, wood and other systems in addition to cold-formed steel. Ford has building credits throughout the United States and outside the country.
Ford is an active voting member, committee member and subcommittee chairman with the American Iron and Steel Institute, American National Standards Institute, American Society of Civil Engineers, ASTM International, the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry, CFSEI and SFIA. He is a registered professional engineer in 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Cold-Formed Steel Engineers InstituteThe Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute comprises hundreds of structural engineers and other design professionals who are finding a better way to produce safe and efficient designs for commercial and residential structures with cold-formed steel.
CFSEI members work together to develop and evolve industry standards and design methods, produce and issue technical bulletins, and provide seminars and online training to improve the knowledge and skills base of engineers and design professionals. For more information, visit www.cfsei.org
